movies will look great on the new 27" led Display.

Do they Fit the whole screen? Or are there black boarders top and bottom of screen?

yeah depends.
true hd looks fantastic and fits border to border on the new displays. i brought a few movies on a flash drive with me to test out

heres sort of an idea, took a screen cap to get a feel for the resolution/size of the display compared to my current 30"

Dude you've got that amazing 27" beast and the best you can do is watch/screen shot some chick flick with most over rated actress (Kathryn Heigl) of all time...? :p

And you know exactly who she is, and what movie thats is by just guessing? Something tells me you also like the movie enough to recognize it!

Whoa whoa whoa whoa....that is NOT a chick flick. That's Battlestar Galactica. Best show of all time. Infinitely worthy of your watching time.

The resolution is 16:9 rather than the old 16:10. So if there are bars they will be thinner.

Yep, thats what i noticed, they werent as bad as playing movies on a 16x10 30" that put bars on either the top/bottom or left/right...it was more streched on the 30" but fit more properly in the 16x9 27"

It was battlestar. it was already in iTunes at the apple store; it was that or devil wears prada lol.

i dont own it yet...i was getting an idea if i wanted to swap out an old 30" display that is nice, but not quite as vibrant as these LEDs :p

My god, that is such a juvenile question. Movies are shot in different ratios. The bars preserve the filmmakers intentions and the quality of the picture. If you do not like them it takes one click in quicktime x to stretch the picture.

No need to be rude

Are you kidding me? How childish are you to think that? Do you not realize that it's the resolution of the file that causes those black bars to appear. The black bars don't preserve the quality of the picture but are just the result of maintaining an aspect ratio... grow up. (I suppose sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet, but lighten up a bit)

For the record there are 2 types of bar - those 'hard crops' that are actually on the film itself (i.e. a 2:35 academy crop that sits on a 16:9 movie) and those 'black bars' that appear when watching a full frame 16:9 film on a 16:10 display. When watching a 16:9 film with an academy crop on a 16:10 display the bars will appear even higher.

I have never thought of it as black bars covering the movie, but as the movie being projected onto a black background, just as there is normally space around the movie when it is projected onto a white background at the theater.

They don't cover the movie at all. I use the term 'crop' lossely but that isn't to say they sit over the film. If you watch a dvd and it's a normal widescreen release (i.e. 16:9) but with top and bottom bars (2:35 crop) then you'll see it how it would be shown in the cinema. It's just your display hasn't got the right aspect ration to fit it 100% each side.

DVD releases of films in a full height 16:9 format have in most cases been 'zoomed into' from an original 2:35 format so you're essentially losing bits off the side. No bars top and bottom but picture missing from the sides (which you probably don't notice).

Ever notice how at the cinema lots of the trailers are show in 16:9 (although some do have a 2:35 crop) and when the main feature comes on the curtains open that little bit wider? Then the main feature is shown in it's full 2:35 glory.

I did not know that, interesting. Thanks!

:D I totally was guessing and I thought it was some chick flick my wife and I watched a couple weeks ago. Someone mentioned it's Battlestar Galactica - is that for real? Is Kathryn "O Rated" Heigl in B G? This is funny...although even if she is in BG I'm so still going to watch that movie - I had no idea they made it! I know I know what can I say I've been under a family and work rock lately.

PS - didn't mean to thread jack I'm done now

New iMac Display

I checked out the new iMacs at the local Apple Store. I was curious about the video quality.

I checked iTunes, and there were two samples: Devil Wears Prada and X Men. Anne Hathaway looked suitably beautiful :D, but the display itself was nothing impressive.

I looked for some pro-apps, and found nothing. I opened iMovie. Wow! The HD footage in iMovie really jumped off the page. I'm well impressed.

Movies will look awesome depending on their source.

The word you are looking for is aspect ratio ;)

anyway, back to the discussion...

I really hope they come out with an adapter for blu-ray devices.... its really a huge SHAME that with such a nice display we wont be able to watch full hd video :(

Yes, I suppose it's the aspect, but the resolution is a 16x9 ratio. I still stand by my words! :D
