Movies On ATV but Not in iTunes?

Hello,

As the title suggests, can you put movies onto the AppleTV but then delete them from iTunes, while still having them on the AppleTV harddrive?

The reason is, I have a PowerBook with a small harddrive, and my AppleTV has been given an HD update to 160gb, but I'm not getting the potential space use as there isn't enough space on my PB to store the movie - which are then transfered to the AppleTV... see my problem? I don't know why I didn't realise this before the upgrade

Nope I don't think so. It works just like an iPod, it syncs to copy your playlists. You can get an external hard drive and store it on there connected to your powerbook put the Movies on the hard drive and open them in iTunes and Apple TV will sync.

iTunes will keep the Apple TV in sync by adding/deleting content. There is no provision for keeping data on it that isn't in your iTunes library.

I have my iPod set to manually manage, so I actually can delete stuff off iTunes afterwards.

You might try this:

1. Sync the movies to the Apple TV.
2. Delete the movie from your laptop's hard drive, but do not delete it from within iTunes so that iTunes doesn't know it's been deleted.
3. From the Sources on your ATV, choose the Apple TV (and not your laptop) to play the movie. I suspect if you try to play it with your laptop as the ATV source, then you'll get an error.

I don't know if this will work - it's just off of the top of my head.

Of course, an alternative is to have an external firewire or USB2 drive for all of your ATV media, then you could connect your laptop to it when you're wanting to use ATV with the laptop as its source. We keep our iTunes music on the internal drive of our Mini and have external drives for podcasts, TV shows and movies (all through the AEBSn).

When you did the ATV hard drive upgrade, did you copy over sshd so that you can log onto your ATV's hard drive? If so, you can try to monitor where the movies are by viewing AFP-mounted Media partition folders by date. As soon as syncing is done, you can view the files (which have non-descript names when copied to the ATV hard disk) by date, and see which ones have the same file sizes as your movies. It would entail some busy work to keep things straight, but it would probably work.

The craziest idea I have is to simply install stock OS X on your ATV, then use your laptop's Front Row on your ATV. This would take a lot of time and experimentation, and it would be wise to have a copy of the ATV's hard drive image stored someplace safe, in case it completely fails.
