I was starting to rip some movies that have certain scenes with subtitles. I used handbrake and when I previewed the movie there were none to be found.

Is there any way around this?

On Handbrake 0.9.2 there is a setting you can check for "Forced Subtitles Only". I'm not sure but I think this is the setting you want to use. If the movie utilizes the subtitle track system for, e.g., momentary translations of foreign dialogue, the process involves forcing the subtitle track to go active at those moments... which suggests to me that the forced subtitles setting is the way to go.

Try it and let me know if it works.

yeah. Might as well always leave the forced subtitles clicked because it's those subtitles that you probably always want to see. At least, they are the ones you see when you play the DVD.

I tried the forced subtitles on one scene in Kill Bill 1 and it did not take. I actually had to choose the 1st english subtitles track and it was fine. However I never got to do a full encode of the movie as HB kept crashing. I am going to run the full encode tonight and see what I come up with.

Actually, that was the exact same movie that made me start this thread. I'll try your method again. Didn't work for me before. Kill Bill crashed my HB on my second attempt of the full encode. One more night of failure and I'm sticking with the DVD.

just for your knowledge, I think I encoded chapter 10 which is the scene were she walks into the bar in japan. You get a good mix of English and Japanese (with subtitles) to test out what setting will work.

I've been doing CH 14 where they are in the bar with "Charlie Brown". Still nothing. I think i'll move onto another QT movie.

I haven't tried Kill Bill, however I did do Lord of the Rings and the elvish shows up without having to do anything, it is already part of the video. For Snatch, there is an option to turn on Pikey subtitles which just gives subtitles to Brad Pitt's character Mickey. In HB you select the last subtitle choice which is English. Not the first english which is all the movie subtitled.
