I've heard if you move overseas the locked phone's carrier is obligated to unlock your phone, true? Also anyway I can end my contract without the termination fees?

I think this pretty much depends on the country where you're living now and the laws there.

If that was the case, I could imagine a lot of people "moving" abroad...

Call AT&T to find out an answer to a question that only AT&T would know. How would you ever come up with such a ridiculous idea?

When I was on holiday in Paris a week ago a guy working at the orange shop told me I can unlock the iPhone by email to iTunes/apple to unlock but I have to pay to iTunes for €100.

Maybe that only apply to iPhone in France.

I have unlocked 3 previous (non-Phone) devices with AT&T over the years when I needed to travel overseas for a few weeks. I assume there will be a different policy for iPhones but dont know for sure.

Yeah, I had no problems with other phones on AT&T (had my LG and my Samsung unlocked when traveling abroad and used local SIMs), but I'm pretty sure AT&T isn't going to unlock an iPhone while it's under contract.
