iPod moving applications to an external hard drive

i moved all of my iTunes audio and video files to an external hard drive by changing the iTunes Music folder location then consolidating the library and it worked fine. is there anyway to transfer my iPod Touch applications using a similar method? it's not that big of a deal if i can't because if i have to restore my computer and i lose my files i can redownload the apps again for free but i have over 80 apps so it would take a while and it would be nice to have a back up.

sorry for digging a dead thread. but i have the exact problem as yours. i consolidated my music and it's fine, but the mobile applications in the external drive is still empty and when i checked it's still in my computer.
