Moving files between finder windows without creating aliases

Hey all. I've been using Mountain Lion for a month or so and either didn't notice this change or somehow screwed up a secret Finder preference.

Am I correct in that moving files from one location in one Finder window to another location in another Finder window (on the same drive) requires the command key? I find it hard to believe I haven't moved files before today but perhaps this is a testament to my stellar organization skills

If having to hold command in order to avoid creating aliases after dragging is the default behavior, is there a way I can tweak Mountain Lion to work the way I'm used to?

Moving a file (within the same drive) does not require the command key. You just drag it to a new place. I believe, in this case, if you do hold the command key you make a copy of the dragged item in the new location.

Creating aliases on the other hand is done by command-option dragging a file.

Thanks. Something must be funky, then. I'm using 10.8.2, and my default drag operation creates aliases. Only when I hold down command do I get an actual move.

Are you moving files so that their source and destination are on the same volume?Moving files between volumes / disks does require the use of the CMD key.
