It's come up to the time when I'm backing things up again on this Windows box, And it's got me thinking on how to move everything over to my Mac when I get it at the start of the new year. My back up mean copying everything onto another internal hard drive, not external so I can't just pic it up and plug it in to the Mac. So I'm thinking 'Is it worth burning everything to CD/DVD this time'.

I've got a firewire to firewire cable 'somewhere', but not an ethernet cable. Am I able to plug my Mac into a PC and use a cable, or do I need to use the Discs. The files are maily music (25gig+) and movies (70gig+).

All up in your bidness
Definitely buy an Ethernet cable. Just plug one end into the PC and the other end into the Mac. You can then access your PC hard drive from your Mac (it will show up as an icon on the Mac's desktop) and copy the files over that way.

Just out of curiosity, does it need to be a patch lead or a cross-over ethernet cable? I know back in the days before WinXP and OSX they were required for networks of two computers, but does it matter anymore???

Modern Ethernet adapters will automatically flip-flop the leads as needed. info on Macs that support this -- it's possible that the PC can do this, in which case it won't matter if your Mac can deal without a crossover.
