After a good year or two? I’ve given up my 16” as a family member needed a new Mac ASAP and they wanted the bigger screen(I planned to sell it towards an 14” MBP but they’re paying for the new Mac instead). Anyway was hoping to wait for the 14” model but being how short notice this was, I had to spring for a 13” M1 16gb/1TB.

The M1 comes today so I’m very excited but I can’t help regret buying it as it’s about to be redesigned soon. I know it’ll still be top of the line but I think some users here can get where I’m coming from.

Either way, this will be an upgrade from my i9 16” which turned into a jet doing the simplest of tasks. I’ve heard the M1s are super quiet and won’t burn your lap after heavy use which I’m excited for. I wanted a 13” for more portability, although 32gb of Ram would’ve been nice, I think I can do 16gb just fine.

Anyone else in the same boat buying an M1 now? Or 16” to 13” users, how do you like the downsize?

I sold my 16” MBP the week after the M1s announced last November and got all but $300 of the $2700 that I paid for it. Could not get anywhere near that today. The fan noise and the heat on the MBP were driving me crazy. I bought the 13” MBA with 16G and 1T storage and could not be happier with its performance. And of course I had about $800 left over. These M1s are fantastic.

Yeah mine came in at around 1749?(Education pricing) then I got a free pair of AirPods thrown in, and I added AppleCare plus taxes making it come out to 2126.96. My 16" was $1300 more than that.

Is there a much difference between the Air and Pro M1s? Seems like the gap isn't that big since they can be configured to the exact same specs. I probably could've got an Air but just wanted the fan incase I do heavy workloads

I ended up getting a base M1 MacBook Air. I'm very impressed with the battery life and overall speed/snapiness of the machine. But to be honest, I miss the MBP 16" screen size. It's been a real struggle for me adjusting down to the 13". I work with a lot of spreadsheets and documents, and my work situation is very mobile so external monitors aren't an option for me. I will probably end up switching to the new base M1 16" solely for the larger screen size when it's released unless Apple happens to release a larger screen size in the Air lineup.

I was in a similar conundrum, but was coming from a 2016 function keys 13" MBP. I recently had the top case replaced so it has a new battery, keyboard, and trackpad, and was hoping to use it for another one or two years before upgrading to Apple Silicon.

Unfortunately my screen died right before I was to start a long trip and needed a computer right away. I was debating between the 16" MBP and the M1 MBP, but decided to go with the M1 because I wanted something more portable for my travels and most of the apps I use will work on it.

It did feel a little strange to upgrade to a computer that basically looks exactly like my five year old MBP (well, I do get the touch bar now, which I am ambivalent to), and I was looking forward to a new design with a new upgrade. But I needed a new machine right away and so far, so good.

Depending on what the next iteration of Apple Silicon looks like, and the updated design, I might sell this computer and upgrade sooner rather than later.

The MBP has a fan so it does have more thermal overhead if you load up all of the performance CPU cores and/or all of the GPU cores, but your mileage may vary depending on workload.

Base models tend to hold resale value pretty well. Don't forget that every time you buy you also lose the tax as well though (for me that would be another $162 making the loss $462 total). The pandemic also inflated used macbook prices by a good 20% or so as well, so you got a better deal than you normally would.

Still possibly worth it depending on how long you keep the machine.

How are you finding it?
Was in the same boat as you - been using the 2011 15" MBP since release but needed a new MBP after it died. Felt the 13" would be too small for me after using a 15" for so many years, but after 1 week of using the 13" it's not been as bad as I thought. The extra portability is a plus for sure but would still get a 16" if I could afford it. The rumoured 14" would definitely offer a good balance, so might upgrade to that size in the future.
