I've lost trust in a lot of what Google does now and beginning to prefer the fact that Apple seems to like to protect my data rather than mine it. Also, Safari seems to work a heck of a lot smoother on both OSX and iOS, and should save me a lot of my MacBook Air battery, not to mention Safari is the default browser on iOS.

I'll list what I use in Chrome and would like out of Safari:
  • Syncing OSX to iOS and vice versa - Bookmarks, passwords/autofill, history, tabs
  • Syncing settings & extensions between OSX computers (iMac and MacBook Air)
  • Blocking Facebook cookies
  • Cmd+Shift+N for a private browsing window (Incognito in Chrome)

That's all I can think of off of the top of my head. Seems like I can sync bookmarks, passwords, and tabs, but can it sync history? Seems like I have to have private browsing in the same window/session, and the keyboard command I use wants to make a folder in some kind of bookmarks thing?

The private browsing thing is important because sometimes I need to log into two accounts on the same site, I also want to easily distinguish between private and non-private.

So how can I go about doing this? Are all these things possible?

Also, what browser do you use and do you use several at once? I know some people who use several browsers at once and I have no idea why you'd want to do that nor how you'd handle it.

Honestly, though, I have no idea about your other 2 questions.

I'm not sure which two, but I'm assuming: I want to block Facebook cookies, I don't know how else to word that. I want my Safari settings/preferences and extensions to sync so that I don't need to mirror them manually on my MBA. Chrome does this.

Well, from searching about I can't see a way to sync my preferences so I guess that'll have to come another day, but there must be a way to block cookies from specific websites?

Also, do you have any idea how I can export my passwords from Chrome and import them to Safari/iCloud Keychain? I think I can see the passwords from Chrome in Keychain already, but not in the iCloud section. There must be a way to simply put them on iCloud as well?

It's really no big deal but why put the cart before the horse? If you don't need multiple browsers then stick with one.

I honestly don't understand what you mean? I was just polling and mentioning something that I've noticed...

Yes, sorry. I don't know of a great way to block cookies from just one site. I also don't know of a way to sync prefs and extensions.

Keychain should have most of the passwords already, which means it's a matter of turning keychain sync on in mavericks and on iOS.

I have got iCloud on, but there are passwords not stored in the iCloud section, how do I move/copy them across?

Note how when I click iCloud, there are less items and also what appear to be a lot of duplicates.

Keychain sync requires Mavericks, so if you're running that, you can go into the iCloud panel in system preferences. Check the box for Keychain and it will run you through a few prompts.

It's been on since I upgraded to Mavericks the day it was available...otherwise why would the iCloud section show up in the sidebar? Did you even read what I said and look at the screenshots? I don't know how I could be any more clear.

Just export your bookmarks in Chrome, then import them into Safari.

If you like the Chrome "engine", but DON'T like google, have you investigated the new "Epic" browser?

Epic (so I'm told) uses the Chrome engine, but "strips out" all the google stuff.
But it does more -- Epic has a built-in proxy to "privatize" your IP address, as well as everything else. It's probably the "most private" browser out there, besides Tor.

I first heard about Epic on macintouch.com, and am kind of surprised that there's been so little discussion of it here....

I think I came across this 'Epic' thing when researching the switch, but from what I read, you can't sync stuff? One of the big things for me is the ability to sync across my devices. Not a complaint about the browser though since if you could sync then I guess it wouldn't necessarily be the "most private".

People like Software Engineer need multiple browsers to do cross browser testing. Developer too need multiple browsers to perform unit testing in all browsers to make sure code is favorable to all browsers. I believe its always good to find answer for which question is asked. Its useless to write something which does not help find solution.

That post was in direct reply to part of the original post, in fact including a quote. If the OP strays from the stated topic in the thread title, there's nothing wrong with responding to the secondary thought. In fact, the first part of your post responded to the same secondary thought in the OP! And you did not go on to answer the question posed in the topic title, instead just criticizing another post for doing what you did yourself. Very perplexing, to say the least.

Valid reason for reviving an old thread: to say thanks for a solution
(there may be other valid reasons as well)
