My current set up is as follows

2006 iMac running iTunes. Music (200gb) stored locally, and TV Shows (1.8TB)/Movies(1TB) stored over two WD Studio Drives (FW800)

The iMac is hard wired to Airport Extreme, which is hard wired to an ATV3.

Everything works fine. (Well almost, ATV stopped waking iMac when needed)
But anyway...

I'm considering moving to a MacBook Pro (new retina one has me drooling) but this would be with a 256gb internal HDD.

So i will need to offload iTunes media to externals. I'm using iTunes match, so music is taken care of, but I fancy dropping all other media into a NAS. (Synology ones seem to be coming up best)

I'm considering a NAS, as I do not want to have a drive attached to the Macbook all the time, and the gigabit connection to the Extreme should be enough, except the Macbook will be connecting via Wifi.

Will this be quick enough for streaming 720p content to the ATV? At the moment everything is fine, but I'm removing a hard wired section of the setup and I'm not sure if it will effect the streaming of the video at all?

Any thoughts? or hopefully experiences of a similar set up?

Think I'd leave it on the iMac rather than have the MBP open all the time or are you not running through a TV?

I'm finding HD served from a 2006 iMac hard wired to router then wireless to ATV3 is good.
