Currently, I’m using a Mac Studio M1 Max with the 10 cpu / 24 gpu / 32gb RAM configuration. I use my Mac for a mix of business and pleasure. I use my Mac to do some 3D modeling work, and occasional video/music editing. I am by no means maxing out my hardware with what I do, but I like the fact that I have absolutely no issues with lag. I also play World of Warcraft and do raids, PVP, etc. I'm used to keeping my graphics for the game around 7 out of 10 and enjoy 90-125 FPS at all times (playing @ 2k on a single-monitor setup).

Unfortunately, my job is transitioning to requiring me to travel quite often (as much as 3 weeks a month), and so I’m looking to trade-in my Mac Studio for a MacBook Pro. Since I’d like to keep playing WoW while on the road and continue my 3D modeling work, I have a few questions to help me decide which model MBP to get. I’ve spent the last two weeks doing some research, and I'm stuck trying to decide between 3 models:

1: Refurb 2021 MacBook Pro 14" M1 Max (10 cpu/32 gpu/32gb ram/1tb storage)
2: New 2022 MacBook Pro 14" M2 Pro (10 cpu/19 gpu/32gb ram/1tb storage)
3: Mew 2022 MacBook Pro 14" Mac Max (10 cpu/30 gpu/32gb ram/1tb storage)

I'm trying to stay under $2850 (including tax, etc). I know that the refurb is a tiny upgrade from my current state, but its slightly older hardware. Where I'm really stuck is whether or not I can see the same performance (or better) with the M2 Pro versus my current M1 Max (especially with World of Warcraft, honestly), or it's worth kissing the top of my price range for the M2 Max.

I tend to upgrade every few years (roughly every 28-30 months), so longevity isn't a tremendous issue. I'm just really stuck on the decision and would love to hear peoples opinions here.

Thanks in advance!

I'd rule out option 2. Option 1 is probably most cost efficient and you're not sacrificing anything in terms of power (it's actually an upgrade in a sense). The only reason I would consider option 3 is if HDMI 2.1 is a game changer for you.

I use a similar config and haven't been tempted by any upgrade and do a lot of similar work as you minus the 3d modeling. The 14 inch is the sweet spot for me for traveling. All three options are going to do what you need it to do, but if you're away from home as much as you say, you might want to consider a 16 inch model. I would prefer a larger screen with graphic & audio work if I didn't have my display I use at home.

If I get the refurb, I may get the 16". I also use Sidecar a lot with my 12.9" iPad, so outside of the modeling and WOW, it may not be a major thing. I'll probably go to a store and look at both screen sizes before ultimately deciding. Thank you.
