After moving from MobileMe to iCloud, I am prompted to create an iCloud email address when checking Mail&Notes under iCloud in System Preferences. It will not let me choose my current MobileMe @me.com address. Is there a way around this or must I create a new one?

I'm in the exact same boat. I can't sync my mail or contacts with iCloud because of this. This is the worst service launch I've ever seen from Apple.

Ok, let me see if I can explain this as I figured it out by accident. If you sign out of your iCloud account under iCloud in System Preferences, it should prompt you to sign out of the same account in Mail (or something along those lines). It will ask if you want to keep or delete things from your Mac ... just agree to it until you are signed out. Then sign back in under iCloud in System Preferences with your MobileMe username and password and go through the set up again. I was then able to link my mail and contacts and everything is working the way it was before except under an iCloud account.
Hope that makes sense. Like I said, I figured it out by accident.

That did the trick! Thanks!

Everything is syncing properly now, but I wonder what will happen with all of my purchased iTunes stuff, as it was all done under the other account...

I read in some tech notes where Apple recognizes both Apple ID and MobileMe accounts per user. I think they are linking the accounts. I had to use my MobileMe account for iCloud but all my purchases are under my Apple ID. So far, everything has been working fine for me.

Apparently you can keep your AppleID for iTunes and use your iCloud/MobileMe username for everything else. I logged into iTunes with my iCloud address on my PC and iPhone and was warned that purchases can only be linked to one account for 90 days ( or something similar) and even though all of my playlists were still visible on my phone, they were all empty. When I reverted back to my AppleID everything magically reappeared on my phone. There is certainly a learning curve when it comes to fully understanding iCloud.
