Moving from XP to Vista (transferring data for iPhone)

As per the title, I'm switching from XP to Vista (I'm just bored while waiting for the new iMacs to come out, then I will switch to Mac!). How to I migrate everything across? Has anyone done this?

No, I haven't, Vista system requirements are too high and it is simply trying to imitate Mac OS X but failed horribly.
 
I agree with what you say about Vista, and I am waiting to move to Mac, but XP is getting quite dated, that's all.

And you can't wait for Windows 7 at least? I wouldn't spend 200 bucks on a crappy OS. I really want Windows to be Windows and Mac to be Mac, both have unique features and I think Microsoft ruined that with Vista. I have a strange feeling that Windows 7 might turn out to be the worse OS of the decade.

Sorry I haven't made myself clear. I meant how do I transfer everything that relates to my iPhone, such as backups, apps, purchases.

Now I understand why you thought it was weird that I posted this in the iPhone section!

I'm using the 7 beta now and I can tell you its miles ahead of Vista in almost every respect. I've literally had no problems whatsoever and this is just the beta version. The new taskbar, while appearing similar to the dock, is very different and extremely functional.

Vista should store everything from XP in a folder names Windows.old. All of your music/data will still be there. You can drag the old iTunes folders wherever you like or just point iTunes to where they are in Windows.old and it should figure itself out. Remember to deauthorize your computer in XP as iTunes will count 2 operating systems as 2 different computers and there is no way to go back and deauthorize after upgrading.

iPhone wise... nothing can be done in a nice GUI way to move your old back ups from your old to new PC.

Now, there is a way, but you have to tweak folder options in XP and in Vista. Also, copy/pasting between a USB drive (or iPod) would also help out. Its rough and not friendly, but gets the job done.
 
Can't you burn off a backup of your entire iTunes library onto DVDs and then pop the DVDs in Vista and upload everything? I did that when I had to wipe my harddrive and reinstall XP. Everything was back the way it was; apps, music, everything...

Also, if you forget to deauthorize in iTunes, no big deal, after you reach the max of 5 authorizations it gives you the option to delete all of them and then reauthorize your current system.

I have heard there is a very noticeable speed improvement of...everything...true? Any cool things you can do in 7??

i never had to go through an upgrade but your best bet might be getting USB/Flash Drives and transfering your data that way or DVD's i think if your upgrading and not "reformating" then your computer should keep the files, after all your only installing a new Os not whiping the hard drive

i was thinking of trying the beta but not sure if my parents will want to how well does it run?

Runs fine on my MB. Albeit I have the 64-bit version. Some perks here and there, but it is as polished as XP is. No hang-ups, so far only 1 error and it was a program compatibility issue. BSOD? None, thus far and I have to congratulate M$ on this one, its way, way, way better than the Vista nightmare.

If you want the beta, you can torrent it. Also, the beta plus the plug on itself on August 1st this year, so you might wanna uninstall the whole thing before Aug 1.

so im still a bit confused once installed you can revert back to your old OS? i am running vista (kicks ass btw) and when we purchased our computer we didnt get any Vista software we were under warranty, i dont need to back files up? i wanna make sure of these things so as to not lose important iphone files and pictures etc.

If you want to be extra safe, you can use Disk Management in Vista to create a new partition and install a different OS there. Other versions of windows will be able to see that partition and you can drag and drop files between them.

im no expert ill have my brother do that part haha provided my parents will go through with it
