Hi all,

I am getting a new 2018 MacBook with Touchbar tomorrow (super excited!!!). I have my Time Machine backup from my very old MacBook (9 years old running El Capitan). I have three questions:

1) Is there a way I can move my iTunes files (including play counts, etc) to my new Mac using Migration Assistant in an easy way? I do not want to have everything from my old laptop in the new one. I have all of my photos backed up in iCloud. I only want iTunes files, and some other document folders in the new laptop. I think overtime the old laptop accumulates lots of files that I do not know what they are and they take a lot of space.

2) Will this process from Migration Assistant work well enough that when I plug my iPhone X to the new laptop, it will just sync new play counts, etc as if it is connected to an old computer?

3) If it is complicated, can I get help from Apple Genius Bar by making an appointment and bring my old and new laptop along with my external drive that has my old laptop data??

Thank you for your help!

1) Maybe, I don't remember if Time Machine will work with such a difference between OS versions. If not, drag the contents of your Music folder from your old computer to your new computer. (Easiest way is use Target Disk Mode between the computers.)

2) It should be find. Open iTunes first and allow it to find the music and update the iTunes database. I don't think you will lose play counts, but it is possible.

3) Apple used to offer a training setup session to help users like you setup your new computer and migrate data from an older computer. I don't know if they will do that at the Genius Bar. But, Apple has some of the best Customer Support, so it doesn't hurt to ask.
