i want to use a 1tb external harddrive for my itunes library
is this possible? i would like this connected to the macbook for access too....rather then just a backup that i would have to load?

Sure... that will work fine. Here is an Apple support page showing how to do it.
 
1) Close iTunes. 2) Move your iTunes library folder (which is found in home folder) <user name> Music > iTunes to your external drive. Make sure than when you move the folder, that the subfolders are included just as they are. 3) Open up iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and change the default location to where you just moved the folder on your external drive.

That should do it.

thats great....now i will hopefully be able to save on the macbook harddrive space and organise a good music library....

is there a way for the itunes just to do .mp3s as i have a car usb stick and it would be good if i could just copy files to the usb, instead of converting and moving from a folder...
