Hi guys.:)

I was wondering if its ok for me to transport my macbook around with me, like a book under my arm or even in a backpack while it's in sleep mode. I just don't feel like shutting the macbook down every time I want to go into a different room or move some place else.

Thanks!

I take my powerbook with me to all sorts of places in my back pack and I always leave it in sleep mode. I've never had a problem. I was just in lancaster and i drove there, walked around, stayed in the hotel, and used it here and there all while in sleep mode...

I take my MB around with me, sometimes in my carrying case, or otherwise in my backpack. I never shut it down, I just let it sleep. I only restart it mabye once every two or three weeks;)

my powerbook hardly ever got shut down unless i was going to be traveling a long while - i always found it annoying having to wait for the thing to start up, so i'd just put it to sleep. ..though i must admit, i dont have the same annoyance with this new MB because the start-up time just rocks...

The hard drive is shut down in sleep mode.

The only difference between sleep mode and shutting down the machine is in sleep mode, a small small amount of power is used to keep the data in ram.

The processor, the fans, the screen, the hard drive, everything else is shut off.

You're fine transporting a sleeping laptop.

It's fine. The SMS may activate if you make some sudden moves. I carry my MB around all the time. Also vertically in a bag.;) You will be fine.

Sleep=off with the tiniest possible trickle of electricity through the memory, and to the little sleep light. Nothing more. Nothing else has power.

So, you're totally safe doing anything that you'd do with your MacBook off, while it's sleeping.

(Pretty much what was stated above, just clarifying what could have been a little confusion about what's on/off during sleep)

yes SMS would be off in sleep mode I would think, as the SMS is for stopping the hard disk drive heads from writing- in sleep mode, the hard drive isn't powered, so there is no hard disk drive writing to stop

Nope. SMS will stop the hard drive heads from accessing the HD if there's sudden movement to prevent damage to the hard drive. But in sleep, the hard drive is off so it's not reading or writing anything anyways

FYI SMS definitely does not work in sleep mode and transporting your notebook in sleep isn't actually that good an idea because the HDD can get screwed. A drop from about a foot completely killed the drive in my Powerbook - and that was in a padded laptop bag too.

The guy who installed the new drive said it would have been fine had the machine been switched off so I don't go anywhere now with it in sleep mode.
