I'll be transferring 500GB of raw photo files from a Dell XPS 760 running Win 7 to a new Mac Mini server tonight. Mini has a 256 GB SSD and 750GB HD. How do I assure that the photos go to the 750 GB HD and not to the SSD? Thanx.
Do you copy them direct to the hard drive or do you use iPhoto / Aperture? If you use iPhoto or Aperture, open the program while holding the option (alt) key, then choose 'create new library', choose the 750GB hard drive as target and klick ok. Then, just drag the photos into the iPhoto / Aperture window and you're done.
If you drag them directly onto the HDD, just choose it in the finder and you're fine.

I've been using Nikon's Capture for editing and PhotoMechanic for organization on the Win7 machine. Are you saying I should open Aperture on the mini with the option key, then choose "new library"? And how does one choose the 750GB HD as target drive? How does Aperture on the mini go to the Dell and grab the RAW files? My intention was to run a USB cable between the two, and use the Mac transfer software. Sorry, this transfer of files is new to me.
I first need to know which software you want to use to organize your photos on your Mac. If you use Aperture (I really recommend it - great piece of software!), than it's pretty easy.
I don't know how exactly the dialogue looks, but it should go about like this:
1) Open Aperture while holding the [alt] key
2) Choose the 750 GB drive in the dialogue (idk how it's called in your Mac, but it should be on the left sidebar in the finder-window which opens)
3) say ok and Aperture creates the library folder on the 750 GB drive
4) Drag and drop the RAW-files inside Aperture
How you get the RAW-files on your Mac? Well, I personally recommend a external hard drive for transferring. But that's basically because I don't know all these transfer programs. What they basically (should) do is give you access on your windows hard drive from Mac OS X? If so, just choose the RAW-files inside the PhotoMechanic-library and drag and drop them onto the Aperture Window, OR press [cmd] + I think to get the import dialogue.
