I have a mid 2009 17" macbook pro with OS 10.10.5. A few years ago I got an external hard drive for back up. When I first got the ext hard drive I used CopyCloner and since that time I have saved all my further photos to the ext hard drive and not to the mac itself. It seems that although all my photos from iPhoto made it in to Apple's newer "Photos" (which is on the ex hard drive) some of the picture's files reside only on my MacBooks drive and not on the ext hard drive. Can I go in to "Photos" and "export" these selected photos to my ext hard drive, or will that only export the icons and not the actual file?

Where is the Photos library? On the external disk? If so then everything inside Photos is already on the external drive.

BTW what are you using for backup now? I assume you must have a second even larger hard drive.

Yes, I do have a 2nd external hard drive which I use for back up.
My iPhoto was on both my Mac drive and my ext hard drive. When I updated the OS software both changed to "Photos". When I search for many of my photo files on the the two hard drives they seem to be only on the mac drive. I can drag the file to my external hard drive but this is time consuming needing to identify the name of the file in Photos, then search for it on the Mac hard drive and then drag it to the external drive.
Thus, I am wondering if there is a way to export the files from the Photo organizer directly to my external hard drive.

Are you using a referenced library? If not you should be able to just drag the library from your Mac HD to the external drive in finder?
