Moving to China, can I unlock legally?

We are moving to China mid year and was wondering if Apple will legally unlock the phone, or how should we do this to keep the phone under warranty? We don't want to jailbreak due to the fact of updates occurring and me not being too technically savvy.

Has anyone had Apple (or AT&T) agree to this? And what kind of hoops should we expect to jump through? Thanks for the help!

No. You'll have to do it yourself. It will void the warranty if you get caught by them with it unlocked.

Back in the summer or early fall, a military guy who was being deployed to Iraq or Afganistan posted to this forum saying he wanted to take an iPhone with him and how could he get it unlocked. Last I read about it, Apple and AT&T had agreed in principle that he should be able to get his phone unlocked to take with him, but nobody had figured out how to accomplish this. While it's possible they've gotten their act together since then and established a set procedure for people moving overseas to get their phones unlocked, I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't.

I would believe that you would have to provide proof the same way a death certificate is required to get someone out of contract without etf. Hopefully you won't have to jump through too many hoops for this legal unlock to happen.
