Hey guys, so here's the situation

I'm moving to uni next month and want a bit of help with sorting some silly little bits out with my computer set up - probably really obvious and I'm just missing them but still - someone else's thoughts would be appreciated.

I've got myself a healthy itunes library (just short of 30gig all said and done - a combo of purchased iTMS music and self ripped CD's) living in the default directory on my iMac at home.

I've got a large number of regularly used documents (probably a couple of gig, maybe a bit more?) that I need access to.

And a large iLife collection of files - mostly in iPhoto (several gigabytes)

I'm looking to keep these on an external hard drive in future (USB2 - several hundred gig) so that I can transfer between the iMac at home, and my Macbook at uni as seamless as possible.

Well I've found the file locations, I'm just wondering is it possible to make iPhoto and iTunes look in an external hard drive for the relevant files, and if so how easily?

The other side of things is does Front Row look at iLife for it's files, or does it look in a particular location?

Any thoughts on the whole thing much appreciated. Not really sure where to start. I have .Mac but obviously this isn't pracitcal for things on this scale.

I don't know if this works, but hear me out anyway . . .
  • Move the iTunes/iPhoto folder over to the external HD.
  • Make an alias of these folders
  • Put the alias where the folder originally was
  • Rename the alias to what it was originally ("iTunes")
  • Put these aliases also on the laptop/other mac.
I don't know whether there are easier/quicker methods, or whether this actually works, but I would have tried this if I was in your situation. Someone may be able to help!?

iTunes will let you choose the location of the Music Folder

Go into the preferences and then into Advanced, the first option is choosing a location

As for iPhoto, it does not have this option

Ok, I've got my drive now and tried this, but it doesn't automatically pick up the files in that location. If I try an 'add to library' iTunes dumps them all in the default location on the internal hard drive. Am I doing something wrong here? :S
