Or is there?

MP 1.1 + 10.7.5 + Nvidia drivers 295.00.05f03

Went to store to get the gtx 570 but said that they were finished with that.
So, did a quick browsing with the phone and was like, yeah, the GTX 660 ought to work!

Fail.

Is it really so that the older fermi cards like 570 work in MP
but the newer 6xx kepler cards don't, no matter what?

I should have return rights so I might not be compeletly shafted..
Or am I missing something?

- Tried with a helper card, old 7300GT.
The screen that is connected to the card gets a picture, but stops
loading after 10 secs and it gets the "Please restart computer" in 5
different languages. Restart = Same thing.

- Tried in slots 1 & 2.

- Seems to work normally in windows under bootcamp.

So, any pointers or should I just embrace my fail?

This is covered in the FAQ thread, Kepler cards aren't supported in Lion and that's the latest OS that runs on the MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1. You might be able to find a GTX 570 or similar Fermi-generation card online somewhere.

Ok, and thanks!

Just to make sure, does the GTX 560 and GTX 560 Ti (GF114) work in
MP1.1?

The vendors around here are out of 570 and if they would order, that would be 350€+ and take 1-2 weeks...
I have the option to change the card to 560Ti or take the cash back.

EDIT : Finally found the relevant snippet from your thread!
"Assuming you are running Lion, then:

- Get a GTX 570 if you have an unlimited budget
- Otherwise, get a GTX 560 or GTX 560 Ti"

I updated the OP of the FAQ thread with that info, for clarification. I don't have access to a MacPro1,1 or MacPro2,1 so all my testing has been done with the new systems that support Mountain Lion (and thus Kepler cards).

Well, bought an ASUS GTX560Ti and things worked out of the box.

The update to 10.7.5 broke the second display support in 4870 anyway.
So things are nice and dandy after all!

Gtx560Ti is about as quiet as 4870 in mac side but in windows it Really
uses the fans. Not disturbing but apparently 4870 was relatively quiet.
