Hello all, I have a early model MAC PRO 1.1 upgraded up to Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
8 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
7300 GT 256 MB

My question is do I spend the time and money to upgrade to the most that it can do?

If the answer is yes, what are the recommended hardware upgrades?

This machine will be used as a desktop machine and I would want to connect to a 4K monitor.

Thanks in advance.

I've got a 1,1 and a 4,1 that I got cheap. My 1,1 will be the downloading machine and sync'ing cloud drives. I know its overkill, but that's what mine will be used for.

For free upgrades:
At least flash the EFI to MacPro2,1
Install OS X 10.11 El Capitan

For cost upgrades, it all depends on how much you want to dump into it, knowing that it is well beyond the end-of-life:
CPU/RAM https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-cpu-compatibility-list.1954766/
GPU https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/gpu-compatibility-list-for-cmp.2174600/

For 4k, you'd almost certainly need a new GPU, as that 7300GT is just about the bottom. I use a Mac-flashed 7970 for both bootscreen and Metal (for Vulkan) support.

Is the case even worth saving? Maybe rip everything out and start over? The expectation would be just to have a power full desktop.
