Hi guys,

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 3,1 and I recently buy a GTX 680.

I have plug 2x24" 1080p monitors and 1x40" 4K monitor on it.

That's working pretty great, but since 2 weeks there is a high-pitched sound that came from the power supply.

The computer is still working great, but the sound is really annoying.

Maybe 3 monitors are take too much power from the original power supply and I need to replace it ?

If so, is there a compatible power supply that can deliver more power that you can suggest to me ?

Thanks a lot !

Two possibilities for the noise.

1) an increase in fan speed is causing the whine

2) a capacitor is about to fail

If it were my machine, I would seek for a replacement immediately (the power supply that is) since I depend on it for work.

Your current power supply is more than enough to handle your setup, but it's just showing its age.

I agree, buying a new power supply seems to be the best option here.
Are you sure the original one as enough power for my setup ? As I remember the GTX 680 take way much power than the original GT xxxx and I suspect that's why the power supply is now tired.

I will go to the Apple store to see if they still sell power supply for the old Mac Pro.

They do not sell it, but there are PLENTY available for sale on eBay from canabalized units.

Sometimes power supplies for Mac Pros are being back ordered in ome Apple Stores and you can try asking. If the PSU is not available, you can try some eBay sellers http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...upply&_nkw=mac+pro+2008+power+supply&_sacat=0

The 2008 Mac Pro is still adequate up to today. Just try keeping the interiors clean from dust.

Thank you guys, I will buy one from ebay, it will be easier.

Bye !
