Recently I took off the Northbridge heatsink and redid the thermal paste on it, and replaced the stock plastic spring clips with new ones:
The original clips were a loss, couldn't be saved. I did keep the springs from them though.
The CPUs are great for temperatures, they have only about maximum 5ºC (sometimes less) between the CPU tDiode and heatsink temperature and basically stay very cool.
But the Northbridge gets hot - I keep the fans up over 1000rpm, but it still has 67ºC tDiode and 52ºC heatsink - if I don't, the tDiode will go over 70ºC. It's working fine, I just thought I might see a bit less of a temperature difference between the two. Are the clips not holding the heatsink tight enough?
For the thermal grease I've applied it carefully over the entire area that should be covered (not excessive amount, but covering properly) same as I did for the CPUs.
The Mac Pro is the following spec:
2x X5690 6 core 3.46ghz
128GB 1333mhz (8x16GB)
Radeon RX580 8GB
Sonnet M.2 4x4 PCIe 3.0 x16 Card with 2x Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
Samsung 970 Evo 1TB 2.5" SSD (the boot drive)
macOS Big Sur 11.2.3
The reading I've done suggests that these specced up dual processor machines will get a lot warmer so maybe I shouldn't really worry.
