Maybe MP3,1 got a new lease in life. @netkas made a patch to make AMD Polaris cards to work with MP3,1 Xeon, emulating a SSE4.2 instruction needed by the AMD METAL driver for Polaris cards.

Read more here: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,13890.0.html

Thx @Nick [D]vB for the tip.

The link won't load for me for some reason. What are Polaris cards, mind giving a few examples? Does this mean they can support Mojave now?

I can’t load the Netkas page right now. May I assume this a patch designed for Mojave?
It's a patch for the AMD Polaris drivers on 10.14.5, to emulate a SSE4.2 instruction needed by the driver. With this instruction emulated, Polaris GPUs work with MP3,1 Xeons.

Sorry guys issues with hosting, but you can find the patch in dosdude's util for Mojave
keep in mind: it's 10.14.5's driver.
sometimes agdp patch is needed (e.g. for my rx560 on mp3,1)
in theory it should work with all amd cards supported by mojave.
But every card may have own quirks to get outputs working

@netkas any chance this could break iTunes?
I’ve not checked crash log as it didn’t dawn on me until now that the reason iTunes was crashing was that it could be related to metal.

It’s an instant crash to the point where you barely even see the app show in the dock.

As usual, find crashlog

Full crash log attached, tried running the iTunes binary from CLI to see the crash reason.

Code:
$ /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes
dyld: Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/libgnsdk_dsp.3.06.1.dylib
  Referenced from: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes
Reason: unsafe use of @executable_path in /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes with restricted binary
Abort trap: 6

That dylib does exist and has the same md5 as on a Mac with iTunes working
MD5 (/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/libgnsdk_dsp.3.06.1.dylib) = 6cbab3dd62f22b3bedb87b6f8faf3313

Might be a side effect of disablelibval.kexr

did you have to flash the card first?
The card has not been flashed. It’s stock.

A special version of refind allows it to have a boot screen (only works for 3,1). The modified driver from netkas makes it so that you can use it in 10.14.5 only.

[doublepost=1562467931][/doublepost]Wow, that means my rx 580, will be able to boot of this....this is awesome x_x. That + an nvme in raid, will make the 3,1 a beast. Thanks netkas!! btw anyone selling a highpoint for cheap ?!?!

Do this apply to the 7xxx and 8xxx and R9 2xx series as well?

I’d love to get a no-fuss AMD card with metal support running on a cMP3,1. It looks like that besides the GTX 680, all the other nvidia cards need the web drivers to properly work…

K4000 works great. I have one running in there now.

Yikes. 100€+ for a K4000, might get a GTX680 at that point for half the price.

I was hoping for a cheaper alternative.
