Before I started with Mac I bought my sister a Sandisk MP3 player and it's finally died.
She wants to replace it but she's completely tech ignorant. She has a kindle and she finally got an iPhone but she has no computer. She has access to my parents computer so she can burn CDs and keep the music on there just long enough to transfer it but she can't maintain any sort of a library on there. For that reason I think using iTunes is out of the question.
She wants it to play music while she walks the dogs, she'd like access to podcasts, and maybe the odd video now and again. She doesn't like to use the iPhone because she plays games A LOT, and says the battery doesn't last as it is so using it as a music player would only drain the battery faster.
Anybody got any non-Apple suggestions?

Based on everything that you've stated, I would either have her purchase an inexpensive Windows laptop and an iPod Nano, or just an iPod Touch, and have her use iTunes.

iTunes is pretty crappy in my opinion until you compare it to anything else available.

You can find usable Windows laptops for less than US$200 now.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it is 2016. It's time she has her own computer.

I couple of months ago I looked around for an iPod alternative and the only thing I found that looked worthwhile were Sandisk and Sony.

One final suggestion, but this is getting to be a little technical, is to find a used Android phone that has a micro-SD card slot and turn it into a dedicated music player.
