MP3 Ringtone sound horrible :(

I followed all the directions and used audacity to cut a small part of an MP3 and then converted it to a ringtone and put it on my iphone and it sounds distorted.
The ringtones that come with the phone all sound so clear, I realize they are not songs but still they sound great. How can i get an MP3 to sound like that as a ringtone/

Use audacity or another program to tweak down the bass/low end levels in the EQ so it doesn't distort. Either way you still get crap but this makes it more tolerable imo.
