Hey there

I recently acquired a 20 hour audiobook, however it is in mp3 format. Has anybody had any experience converting this to whatever audiobook format is? I'd really love to be able to use the ipod feature to speed/slow down the playing of it, as well as how it bookmarks where you are on it.

Thanks in advance,

just an off the wall idea... change the genre to audiobook? no idea if that'll work. i've only used audible audiobooks on my ipod so i couldn't tell ya otherwise

I am assuming that by "audiobook format" you are referring to Audible format supported on the iPod.
If so, the answer is no. You best bet is to chop it up to 3-5 minute sessions, divide it into folders and listen that way to keep it in order and to listen to it a little more conviniently.

Interestingly enough, I just figured out how to turn mp3s into audiobooks today.

Step one...convert your mp3s into AAC files (.m4a) using iTunes

Two...in the finder, change the file extensions for those files from .m4a to .m4b

Three...download an audio bookmarking iTunes script from www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makebookmarkable and install the script

Four...Add the new .m4b files to your iTunes library, select them, and select the Bookmarking script from the Scripts menu.

Should work like a charm...although I ended up having to manually delete the files from the iTunes library and add them back after step four in order for iTunes to recognize them as audiobooks...but it worked!

If you're going to use them with an iPod, you'll need to delete the old files off the pod and add them back for the changes to be seen there.

If you have more questions, etc., just post, and I'll fill in gaps.

That's wondeful! There are some excellent free audio books on MP3, and this will be very helpful!

FYI: although the site indicates that URL's are transient, this script is currently located here, and it is called "Make Bookmarkable".

Try AudioBooksForFree. Sometimes the links don't work, and it's not the world's best audio or narrator quality, but the books are worth every penny! ;) Note that you can pay for higher quality, but it won't (obviously) improve the narration.

And, yeah, Life of Pi is excellent - I'm just not sure I'm a huge fan of the ending. But the narration is amazing.

Mein Kampf by Hitler.... hmm, that's a weird one.
