MP4 vs M4V?

Hey Guys,

I cant seem to figure out how to get about half of my videos on my iPad. I have a number of videos all saved in iTunes at approximately the same resolution. The only difference I can see is the ones that won't sync to my iPad are MP4 files instead of M4V.

I have tried changing the extension, and that didn't fix the problem.

I have tried changing the extension, renaming it, and then putting it back into iTunes, still didn't fix the problem.

I ran it through Handbreak and it fixed the problem. Both files show up under Get Info as H264 at about the same data rate, yet only the new one will go on my iPad.

I am attaching two images from the Quicktime Inspector for each file. Can anyone explain a quicker way to make these files work than running them all through Handbreak?

If your mp4 is not h.264 video, but uses the older mp4 codec, it probably has to conform to more strict standards to go on the iPad. The m4v video was encoded using hte h.264 codec which is more flexible.

The extension isn't really a big deal, though I think iTunes wants the m4v extension for videos with chapters and/or multiple audio streams.

Basically, its the video that's the problem, not the file extension. Try re-encoding from the source file (DVD, mkv?) with Handbrake. If that's not possible, then you'll have to reencode with Handbrake or Quicktime pro to get the files to be compatible.

Thats what I was afraid of. I am currently re encoding them with handbreak as an H264 file. It is working, but it is taking forever. It looks like I am going to spend the next two weeks with handbreak sucking up my processor in the background. I wish I could just rewrap them.

Use iSquint (it's free) and it's fast, when something is already encoded, I had that problem with Handbrake too, never understood why.
