I am having random restarts when using parallels on my mac pro 5,1 on a samsung 850 evo 1TB SSD.

Is there any known issues with these drives. I am wondering if it is the firmware causing the restarts because when the mac restart the disc is not present on the desktop until I do a full shutdown and then reboot. (not a restart).

Anyone know anything about this issue?

Cheers

AFAIK, there is no know incompatibility with 850EVO and MP5,1. Did you checked the SMART report of the drive? Install the 14-day trial of DriveDX and see if the 850EVO has any problems.

Hi, Thanks for your reply.

I have just run Drive DX and there are no problems to report all at 100% wear level at 99% and temp is quite high but still ok.

Do you think it may need a firmware update?

Worth a check, put the drive on a Windows PC and run Samsung Magician.

I've been a little weary of it as I haven't got a back up of the disc! But i know it 'shouldn't' affect any of the data

You can check if the firmware is the current one, it's the Revision below:

Samsung QVO drives are not compatible with MP5,1, change it to EVO or PRO drives.

Bugger, that will be my problem then. SO the evo's obviously are OK then?

If you search for Samsung QVO drives here on the Mac Pro forum you will see all sort of problems, from drives not working after sleep or drives not being recognised after reboot/only from cold boot to frequent KPs.

Replace the drive.

Apart from the random restarts it is ok. Although it has got more frequent since I updated parallels.

Could I use the QVO as a storage drive with no OS or will it still cause problems like that?

I've been using 850EVO and 860EVO for years and never had any issue related to them.
Cool thanks, wish I knew that before!! Never thought there would be a difference.
