The MPX slot architecture, I think, can pump out an extra 450w of power through the MPX ports. I wonder if it will be possible to make an adapter that goes from MPX slot/portion to 6/8pin cable that can be used to power a video card in the regular PCI slot adjacent to the MPX slot portion?

The idea is I have an AMD WX 9100 card. Rather than using the crazy overpriced Belkin AUX power cable kit for the Mac Pro, it seems to me it would make sense to have something plug into the MPX portion of the slot, while the 'regular' video card is in the 'regular' PCI portion of the slot, and then draw from the MPX portion of the slot through an adapter into the 6/8pin ports of the video card.

Anyone know if something like this will be possible?

BTW, here is the overpriced set of Belkin AUX power cables:

It's certainly possible, but will probably cost more than the Belkin 6-cable kit since will be needed a PCB, probably some passive components to filter the power/reverse polarity protection/etc and cables to connect to the PC GPU.

Good quality PCBs are not cheap, it's not something that will be produced in large quantities.

You could sell the Mac Pro and buy an AMD powered PC and a new Nvidia card and it will already have the cables on the ATX power supply to power it and you'll have money left over. Congrats, problem solved! :-D

Agreed. I would want one of these from a reputable maker like Belkin and not random china inc manufacturer. I think it would be a nice thing to make the area tidier. Yea, in the mean time, I bought the overpriced belkin cable set.

Just a bump to the thread to see if anyone has heard anything about such MPX power adapters?

Pssst.... just get the Belkin cables.... It's exactly what you need, and would cost less that this adapter that you're proposing that would likely also cause clearance issues.

I've got the same card and have the Belkin cable kit, and I found I had to use two cables to power the card. With one cable it beeped like buggery so I added a second cable and powered from Port 3 and 4 on the MB and it works fine. I did keep the standard card in there also but its not plugged in to any screens. At the moment my 9100 is connected to a 4K KVM and works fine.

Yea I also had to use one 6 and one 8pin connector to get the card fully powered.

I bought the Belkin kit too, to try to get the attached monstrosity powered. Two power ports for slots 3-4, but the third...??? It appears to say here that there are 2 for slots 1-2, 2 for slots 3-4, and 1 for slots 5-6. But if I'm reading above correctly, I should be able to put one of these into a MB port reserved for another PCIe slot...? I'm wondering if I'm screwed and this card won't work at all in a MacPro7,1 ?
