I should probably the turn the computer off if I do this, right?
And if too much water gets on the trackpad what will happen?

just be careful about potentially getting water INSIDE the case. water and electronics do not mix very well...

You really don't use that much water. Soak the Magic eraser in water and then squeeze out as much as possible. It should barely be damp.
