G'day,

I've just set up my dad's M1 iMac using his Time Machine backup from his old iMac, which has MS Office 2011.

The app icons are all "crossed out" with the not compatible with this OS white/grey icon.

When I try open them, I get a message saying that it's not compatible and I need to upgrade to the new subscription service.

Yet - other apps say they just need Rosetta installed to run Intel apps...?

Why is MS Office (Intel) not able to operate under this OS? (Big Sur, on an M1)

Cheers

Sorry - just googled and found the answer - not 64bit so wont run. :(

Will have to look at whether my father can handle Numbers instead...

An option, if possibe (network reliability), is the free version of Microsoft Office 365 online with gives you all or most essential office functionality!

If he has a Microsoft account, and he's not a power user of any of the Office programs, there are stripped-down free versions available to him online, and he can save everything to OneDrive. Just a thought.

His use of Excel amounts to 1 spreadsheet containing a list of his shares, that he updates once a week or so.

His use of Word was a bit more extensive, although he's retiring from most of the community committees he has been sitting on the for the past 15-odd years now at the age of 74... but he'll still no doubt want to do some word processing.

So - if I could get the existing, familiar option (ie Office 11) to work, that would be more than suitable for his needs. It's taken me over a year, and then a dead back-light on his 2008 iMac to convince him it was time to upgrade the computer, because he's scared it is going to be "too different" and hard to learn something new.

He doesn't have an MS account, and using his c/card online isn't going to happen either.

What's the latest version of Office that's stand alone - no subscription? 2019?

Actually I’m pretty sure that they just came out with the 2021 version of office mac. I just googled it and they do have it, currently in sale for $$100 for the one computer, home version for the next 15 hours

Thanks for digging into that. I hate to give out bad info!
