Well, I'll go with the standard reply for starters - did you repair permissions and reboot? Otherwise, re-installing Office does not take very long at all on the Mac - you could always wipe the App files clean and start over with little difficulty.

As mad jew said, let us know what type of errors you received and we'll go form there in trying to assist you.

And you get a similar log for the other apps (Excel, Entourage and PowerPoint)? :)

Unfortunately the age-old practice of deleting PLIST files can be pretty cumbersome for Office. You've got to be careful you don't end up deleting your custom dictionary etc.

Hmm... Well as a start, I'd check to see if it's a preference issue as the formidable ~Shard~ and PlaceofDis have alluded to. I have Office X so it may be slightly different but I'd start by going to the Preferences folder on my Home account (it's in the Library) and dragging the following to the Desktop:

  • com.microsoft.PowerPoint.plist
  • com.microsoft.Word.plist
  • A folder named Microsoft.

This will remove more preferences than necessary but they can be placed back afterwards. It'll get rid of custom dictionaries, Messenger preferences and RDC preferences where applicable but don't worry about that yet, we're just trying to narrow down whether it's a preference issue at all. :)

Now open an Office app and see how far you get. :)

Good suggestion, that's probably a good way to try and isolate things. Oh, and when I said do a reinstall in my above post, I didn't mean a restore of the whole system, just Office. ;)

I hate the way Microsoft does its own thing with preferences on the Mac. :(

Any other app/suite and this would be a relatively simple process.

Yeah, absolutely - leave it to MS to do things "the stupid way" and cause unnecessary issues like this. Office X is, truthfully and ironically, the only app that has ever crashed on my Mac... ;)

Really? I've only had Office crash once (Word) but VLC crashes every few months. Safari's done it four times too. All up, it's a pretty good hit rate considering how many things I do at once on my babies. :)

Of course, I really only right uni papers in Word which isn't very crash-inducing.

Yeah., I know what you mean. ;) Nope, I have never had any other app crash on me, unless you count VLC not being able to play a file or having trouble with it, but that's only because it was a WMV3 file or something of that nature.

Have you upgraded to the new VLC which was released a couple days ago? Not sure if that would help, but it never hurts to have the most current version of an application. :)

Yeah, thanks. I've been running it for a while but it doesn't seem much better. I don't watch countless videos so it doesn't really bother me. :)

Look for duplicate and/or corrupt fonts. Office apps don't tolerate them well.

Good point. Mostly Office tells you if there's a problem with the fonts, but not always. Also check in the Classic System Folder for bad fonts if applicable.

Gotcha - just thought I'd make the suggestion for what it was worth... :)
