Earth (for now)
I have a legit copy of Microsoft Office 2016. I noticed in the Microsoft AutoUpdate screen it says that to update, an "Office Upgrade Required". So, what happens if I update? Do I lose my licence or something? Or does it just upgrade and nag me to upgrade to Office 2019?

I had been under the impression that I'd be getting Office updates until October 2020.

This is just an advance warning for the pending end of support for 2016 which, as you wrote, happens in October. For those of us who support Office in business, users will still complain that they had no idea.

Last time I updated Office on a previous system it lost the license key and I had to find and re-enter it again.

Now, Im also running Office 2016, but I ignore all updates. Like many Microsoft updates, I've had many bad experiences with updates breaking more then they fix!

Interesting. On my other machine, I don't get that "Office Upgrade Required" message. Maybe it is because it has an older version of Office on it? On the machine above, I had 16.16.20061500. On the machine below, I had 16.16.20030700.

Anyhow, since I don't use Outlook, I went ahead and upgraded that on the first machine with the warning, and there was no problem with it. I then went ahead and updated PowerPoint, and it's fine too. Excel and Word still work fine after upgrades too.

I think Microsoft is being intentionally obtuse about the warning, to get people to move to 2019/365, even when they don't need to.

Yeah, I just did this myself. It's just a warning that you'll need to upgrade down the road to continue to get security patches. Otherwise the update works as intended. It's a poorly implemented warning, but as you said - perhaps intentionally.
