Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum, and relatively new to macs in general.
I was wondering if there are any MSN Messenger Clients at all available for OSX that allow you to view the "subnames" that the new versions of Messenger allow for PCs... Basically, after the user name there will be a second 'name' in gray italicized font. Similar to the idea of Away messages in ICQ, I suppose. Anyway, the official client doesn't support this feature, nor does Adium, which I understand is generally considered the best option.
Cheers.

If you mean the "personal messages", Mercury Messenger will do it ;)

Adium and aMSN both view sub names, they also will show the current song being played in iTunes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Adium won't display MSN personal messages (I don't know about AIM's)

Personal messages were introduced in MSN Messenger 7 along with Winks, Nudges, Spaces, etc.

There's even a ticket about it in Adium (see here and here).

AFAIK the only messenger that has that feature is Mercury, and maybe the new aMSN 0.95 (I haven't checked that)

You're right, Adium doesn't show them. I'll give mercury another try, but last time i used it it kept crashing.

Semi-OT... what is a Wink? Is it something nice, or should I not regret lacking this feature?
Actually, you're not missing much. Winks are annoying Flash animations that people can send you. More info can be found here. All I can remember is that they cover the whole screen and they slow down the computer. Mercury will let you decide whether to play them or not, but the official Windows client will just play it without notice.

Nudges... that's another story, those are worst, they make a ring noise and shake the conversation window.

But personal message are actually useful IMO, for example, the other day I friend canceled a party and he placed the message in his personal message field. Or those people that have really long nicknames can break them down in two, so they just place their name in the regular field and anything else in the personal message field.

But beleive me, you aren't missing much with the winks.

Ugh...never underestimate the ability of a Microsoft product to irritate. ;)
Oh yeah... and I can't wait to see what the upcoming Windows Live Messenger will do to annoy users.

I hate that MSN Messenger is the standard where I live :(
