Much better reception when iPhone is docked?

I go from none to 4 bars if I dock the phone. Does anyone else have this happen?

Perhaps the radio switches to some low-power mode if only on the battery? Any ideas?

Probably because your hand is not covering the antenna when it's docked - I noticed this though. Creepy. AT&T's service is fine outdoors and in a car but in certain parts of a house the roof does a good job of blocking signal.
