I have two 8.5x11".ai files that I need to save as a single two page pdf document.

The goal is for people to be able print the pages out on their home printers.

I don't have Acrobat. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how I can get this done?

Depending on your set up (i.e. Illustrator version, psdriver) you can setup multipage PDF's directly from Illustrator, very easily. While I would recommend getting Acrobat (for Distiller) this would allow better compression and PDF creation Control.

Also you can open AI files in Preview and then save the page out as a PDF, and then use Automator to easily combine pdfs together.

If you want I can post a short how to.

please do

If you have also have photoshop, you should be able to automate a pdf file by Selecting from the menu pull down: File/ Automate/ PDF Presentation. In here you will have the option to select the files you want to make into a multi-page pdf presentation or slide-show.

sorry for the delay Work has kept me seriously busy this week.

Ok in Illustrator:

Select File > Document Setup. Set the document to the size you need
(ie, if you want a 2 page 8.5x11 set the specs to 11x17, 3 pages would be 11x25, and so forth)
Next go into print dialog box Command+P

Select
Printer: Adobe Postscript file
PPD: Adobe PPD
(if you don't have this PPD get it from Adobe it's Free)

In the General box:
Media
Select the settings you need. For 8.5x11 Select Letter in the Size Box.

Options
Make sure to select Do not Scale

Click on Setup on the left.

Options:
Select Tile Full Pages in the Tiling drop down box.
Thats it press Done or Save Depending on your need

When your done and made your PS file right click or Command click on it and select open in>Preview.

Once Open in PDF Select File>Save As... Select PDF.
===============================

Or much faster way:

in Finder Select your AI file right click or Command click on it and select open in>Preview.

Once Open in PDF Select File>Save As... Select PDF.

do this for all the files you want in your PDF.

In Automator create your workflow. In this order:

1. Finder>Get Selected Finder Items
2. PDF>Combine PDF Pages
3. Open Finder Items (choose open with: Preview)

Click File > Save As Plug-in yada yada you got a control-clickable action to combine your pdf files.

The PDF will open you can then save it.

Hope this helps

Or you could just download PDFLab, drag in all the files you want combined, and click "join."

Sorry, I know someone asked, but I didn't want anyone to be left with this impression that this operation needed to be any more complicated.

Yes you can download PDFLab, but I don't see why one should install a new program when you already have the programs needed. And if you set up automator you can set it up as a plugin and be good to go.

Okay, but PDFLab is free, and is very easy to use. It also accepts other image file formats, allows page orders to be shuffled, blank pages to be inserted, watermarks to be added, etc. Compared to making this happen in Automater, PDFLab is far and away the easier and more flexible method. One of the best freeware applications available for the Mac, maybe for any platform. That's why they should download and install it.

I use an automator workflow

step 1. Get specified Finder Items - then drag the items you want to go into the pdf

step 2. Sort Finder Items - sort by whatever you choose. ascending etc.

Step 3. combine pdf pages

step 4. Open finder items.

Just in case someone wants to see the automator workflow anyway. I like it! :)
