Multiplayer online games ?

I'm interested to buy a smartphone like an iPhone next time. I'm mainly interested to know if you can play online multiplayer games ?

Mainly interested in board games (like chess, etc.), please let me know if you are able to play these types of games using the browser (ie. facebook games, yahoo games, etc) or you have to buy an app.

The iPhone doesn't support a lot of the formats that games like Yahoo or MSN use, and Facebook chess is very slow in loading, and half the time doesn't finish loading. There are a few free online chess apps, otherwise you've got to pay for the apps.
