Watching a documentary on my TV with my AirPods and would love to be able to listen to music from my laptop or phone at the same time - with independent sound levels.

Does anyone know if that's reasonably feasible in the relative short term?

To my knowledge, that isn't possible with any* Bluetooth headphones at present. You can certainly connect to multiple devices at the same time, but one or the other will take precedence and the other device will be muted.

*supposedly there are some models that can do this, but they must be quite rare.

you may be able to do it with airplay, but that would require you to be able to watch the documentary on your laptop.

you can use airplay display to make the aTV a second monitor, and drag the (I'm guessing browser) window over to the aTV. This would allow you to continue to use the laptop display for anything else. Just hook your AirPods to the laptop.

Or you can mirror the whole display.
