Multiple Desktops (_not_ spaces) with Different sets of Icons?

Does anybody know of a program that allows one to create multiple desktops _and_ allows each desktop to have different icons?


This has been driving me crazy looking for something; i have only been able to find a couple of defunct applications (or ones that won't work on Leopard or Snow Leopard.) It would be of colossal/walloping/herculean help to me to be able to keep all my school icons on one desktop and the rest of my icons on one or two other desktops. Spaces is absolutely worthless for this.


(and i know you are not supposed to keep a lot of things on your desktop but it seems to be the only thing that really works for me.)

As long as you're not keeping actual files on the Desktop, you shouldn't have a problem. If you are, consider changing the files to aliases and keep the files in the Documents folder where Apple says they belong.

Thanks, but unfortunately that program is pretty much a pre-Spaces Spaces. :\ It allows different windows to be open in different desktops, but not different icons. If i recall correctly, it is also now defunct since that spaces came out.

There was a program called YouControl from YouSoftware which seemed like it would have been fine, but they stopped supporting it last year, at which point it worked on 10.5, but not 10.6, with no plans to extend compatiblility. I still have 10.5, so i did try to get it anyway but at that time i was unable to purchase a full copy of the program. (Okay, i just checked the site again and the site is updated to say it seems compatible with 10.7 and they may be developing it again? The purchase-option also seems to be working now too, so....)


Okay, to everyone else though, i know it seems like YouControl being possibly back up is a good-enough solution, i still want to leave this thread open and i am still seriously looking for programs that allow for different icons on different desktops. YouControl might not actually work out (i was pretty excited about using Spaces until i got it and found out how useless it is to me), etc, and i would really like to have other solutions on hand. Especially since i have spent _so much_ time on this problem already.

Yeah, it's not like I have something installed that does what you want. Maybe there is no such thing at this point in time. Now, something else I've not tried: multiple accounts. I imagine you don't want the hassle of logging out and back in to get the other account's desktop though.

I had not thought about the multiple accounts thing.. I'll see if i can't configure things to work in a way that that would satisfy me, so thanks.

It very well might be that i won't be able to find a program, but it seems like one _should_ exist! Im not the only person in the world interested in this am i? That said, i am getting the feeling that i do a lot of things differently than normal, though since this goes on a long list of 'programs and devices i assume exist since they seem like they would be super useful to a lot of people, but that do not actually exist so maybe i just look for weird features that no one else actually wants.' Its times like this i wish i had learned some programming (and comp engineering).

Because of the way the Desktop functions, I'm not sure it actually is possible. I hope you can find a solution that works for you, but it's probably well worth looking into alternate solutions, rather than that particular method. Perhaps an app like DragThing, which would allow you to keep a "Dock" type launcher on each space, would be helpful?
