Hi Everyone,

I updated my 2012 MacBook Pro to 10.15.1 and rebooted after some lengthy uptime [a few days], and on reboot, my system hung about 3/4 of the way through the loading of the OS, and after awhile kernel panicked and rebooted. This continued a few times [probably six times?], and finally booted fully into the OS. I was presented with a “There was a problem” dialogue box asking to send the error to Apple. I summarized the hanging/panic/rebooting I had gone through multiple times.

I am not thrilled with how buggy this wave of releases [macOS, iOS, tvOS, and watchOS] have been.

I’m curious if anyone else has run into this? My data seems to be intact, but I’m going to run drive utilities [smartctl] To test the drives I have installed and will eventually reboot to test the memory [either Apple memory test or memtest].

I think there are some problems with 10.15.1...

I have continuous kernel panic that I didn't see from years now.

Post the KP report, and we might be able to help. This way, there is very little we can tell.

I have changed my nvme ssd back to the original one (shipped by apple) with 10.15 installed... I can't afford continuous reboots while I work.

So it stopped, and is working alright now?

If so, then OK.

Wait... I have two ssd drive for my Mac Pro. The original one shipped with the nMP and an nvme I bought one years ago.

On the original one I have 10.15 installed. On the nvme I installed 10.15.1... And it get kp every 'minute' or so after reboot.

So I'm back with the original apple ssd with 10.15 and it work with no problem. I'm waiting TM to finish the backup so I can try to install 10.15.1 on the original apple ssd and see what happen.

There was a feature in Disk Warrior to 'deep scan' files. CCC can also check every file's integrity during clone.

I've had kp and I wonder if they are HDMI related.

It feels like when SDRAM lacked SPD and Apple wouldn't accept those DRAM modules.

I had to replace a 3.5 year old USBC dock to get HDMI output after 10.15.1 (not before) on my MacBook - use as desktop 99% of the time with monitor etc. 10.15.1 was to address some HDMI related issues oddly enough.

So might be Apple changed and tightened requirements.

At this time I'm using the Apple SSD with 10.15.1... I'll try to attach my thunderbolt 2 disk one by one.

@StellarVixen Same here on macOS 10.15.1 and also after upgrading to 10.15.2

Any tips or suggestions on troubleshooting are much appreciated.

See attached Kernel_2019-12-17-100020_ss-eng-esutton.panic.txt

IOAHCIBlockStorageDriver::CommandTimeout!

Repeatable Steps

1) Power-up and let computer sleep
2) Wake computer, enter password, see spinning beach ball
3) Kernel panic crash

  • Tried PRAM reset
  • Using a second external monitor display.
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) MacBookPro10,1
  • Using 2 TB OWC Aura Pro SSD ( 1.92TB / 1.3 TB free)
It could be a coincidence, but I did not have kernel panics before upgrading to macOS 10.15.1

I made a Carbon Copy clone yesterday.

Any tips or suggestions on troubleshooting are much appreciated.

I thought that the 10.15.2 update fixed things for me, but I got a hang/kernel panic when I tried to reboot.

What's odd is that while it is hanging, I can ssh into the system.

I've also found that disconnecting the external display and rebooting prevents the hang/kernel panic.

This is just a work around though.

Exact same issue here on an old iMac 11,1 (late 2009), which runs with Catalina patcher. I thought it's a patcher problem, but apparently not. My iMac's Catalina runs on an upgraded 3rd party SSD.
Thanks for any insights into this (I had the crashes on 10.15.0 - 10.15.2)

I think this is the issue. I have the same issue in my iMac (late 2014 5K iMac). My 2TB Fusion drive failed along the way so I replaced the platter with a 2TB SSD. Since Catalina I've gotten KPs every time my Mac falls asleep (or when I try to wake it - it's tough to say exactly).

If you read through the many threads about Catalina crashes and KPs, it seems one of the common aspects is the use of either external monitors or 3rd party SSDs (internal or external). It's as if there's some connection/bus issue in Catalina.

I've 'solved' it by turning off the Eco settings. Specifically, I never let my screen go dark, and never let the Mac fall asleep. Since I did this I haven't gotten a single KP. It's hardly a solution obviously, and I turn my screen brightness as low as possible every night, but at least it works.

I was also suspicous about the 3rd party SSD. Luckily my KP and random reboots happen only every couple of days (maybe once every 1-2 weeks). By the way, I had this issue also under Mojave (from 10.14.5 I'd say).

I got a similar panic during system sleep a few times in earlier versions of 10.15, but since updating to 10.15.2, it's been once or more nightly, often just minutes after putting the system (iMac 18,3; boot device: 512 Gbyte internal flash storage; two HDDs and one SSD [Samsung 860 EVO 1 Tbyte] in an external, OWC Thunderbay 43 enclosure) to sleep.

The "power on hours" value is off by 18 from the value SMART Utility reports for the external SSD, so I'm wondering if it isn't the internal storage that's the issue. I don't know whether "fBuiltIn = 0" conveys in formation of interest.
