We have a mac mini, 3 mac books, my parents mac, and a windows machine. All on a home network comprised of ethernet and some wireless. I set them all up for everyone; and I am on all of them along with their username. I end up using the same username and password on all of them.

I am in the process of setting up a mac mini to run the OS X server software. Mostly for hobby reasons, but to run itunes, cacheing, and do some basic network stuff. i hadn't planned to have it run everyones individual macs with open directory. That seemed way over my head.

So in setting up this server and these individual macs, should I be using different names when i set them up?

I already made up a user to automatically login to the server machine and run iTunes, but its starting to get confusing on what to do with having all these macs run together.

check the sharing preference pane, should be listed as name1, name2... something like that (so the macs themselves should sort that out); or rename them there yourself...

The only downside I see to using the same username is if you've used a very simple password. Otherwise, why not.
Each computer has a different name, right?

If its anything setting up Windows servers, then yes...

If I set up any usernames in AD (Active Directory) under Windows server editions i would give them all different usernames/passwords.

It would be good anyway for extra security on OS X.... That way no one can access each others Mac with the same credentials and get at personal files.

i have the same username & password on both my macs, but in the sharing preference pane, named them like this:
"NAME Macbook Pro", "NAME Macbook"...
