Multiple Shared Devices on Yosemite

I don't know if this is a Yosemite glitch or perhaps some "normal" glitch. LOL

Or if its a glitch at all. But I'll attach a screenshot, of 5 or 6 versions of my iMac, appearing in the shared file, and I thought it might be due to NAT.

However, I thought I was supposed to have a NAT but I'm not sure why
so many version of my computer would be shared, and which one to share to.

Has anyone seen this and have a work around or suggestion for fixing?

If you don't have Windows computers in your network or other devices using Windows sharing protocols, try turning off the SMB sharing in the System Preferences (but keep AFP sharing enabled).

Sleep & AppleTV or Synology

It appears to be a combination of 2 things. Firstly it is when the Yosemite machine wakes from sleep and thinks there is another machine with the same IP address on the network. The machine name gets changed, adding (1) (2) etc.

Then it appears that another box on the network, in my case it was an AppleTV, has cached those names. Rebooting the AppleTV got rid of all the duplicates.

I have heard that perhaps removing any static IP addressing on a router may resolve the sleep issue, but I have not tried that yet myself. Now that I have gotten rid of all the duplicates I will see if the problem comes back.

I have also heard that Synology boxes cause the same problem by cacheing the names.

Ive been experiencing the same issue, though the duplicates are showing up in devices rather than shared.

Ive also noticed that when there are no duplicates, just one(my) computer as I would expect, the computer name is always followed by a number (2)/(3)/(4)

this has been happening for me for the last few DP releases. Kept hoping each new version would fix this.

I keep seeing this message in console, which I think might be related:

I changed my DNS servers to Google's and the "Basic DNSResolver dropping message because it doesn't match the one sent" errors stopped.

Try changing your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and see if that helps.

Hmm.. if that works.. I'm wondering if the issue lies with Airport/Time Capsule?

I have an older 2 TB Time Capsule. What does everyone else use?

I think, at least for me, it has to do with the ISP's DNS servers. Everything is running smooth again for me. I'm in vegas on centurylink.

Try going to system prefs-sharing. Change your name to "Jennafer's iMac then hit the edit button. Restart your router and iMac. That helped with my issue right after an install. I think the router was cacheing the name and ip. Its all clear now.

Could this have something to do with Yosemite's inability to connect to a networked drive attached to my AirPort Extreme? I noticed that many others are having the same networking problems. And when I just checked my computer's name, it's been changed to "MacBook (7)". Wut

Solution

OSX is the source of the problem.

Turn off all of the "Services" under "Sharing" in the OS X Control Panel to resolve the issue until Apple issues an update.

... then restart all of your Apple devices.

I later used ONYX 2.9 which discovered that the sharing plist was damaged.

"/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist"

I deleted the plist and enabled all of the "Services" under "Sharing" in the OS X Control Panel.

So far that seems to have fixed the problem. Still testing.

Note: I did not need to use any of the other solutions in this thread.

i use a 2TB older for storage, and a 3TB with 5ghz and they flicker off and on, sometimes they are on all the time and sometimes they drop out and I have to airport them all back.
