Multiple Tabs as Homepages in Safari-possible?

Hi folks.

I've decided to try and make the move from Google Chrome to Safari.

One simple thing I'd like to do is have several specific tabs open whenever I start Safari.

In Chrome this was simple, as you pretty much opened the webpages you wanted, went in to Settings and clicked "Use these pages", but in Safari, it doesn't seem that simple (or maybe it is and I'm as blind as a bat!).

I use the same feature in Chrome but I have not found a way to do that in Safari. I am finding this newer version of Safari faster and have changed it to my default browser.

It is possible in Safari too. Go to the General tab in Safari preferences. Under ‘New windows open with’ you select ‘Choose tabs folder…’ and point to a bookmarks folder that contains the websites you want to open. Whenever you open a new Safari window, these tabs will be opened.

You can create a new bookmarks folder with opened tabs as well. Just open the tabs you want and go to Bookmarks in the menu bar and select the option ‘Add Bookmarks for These X Tabs…’. Now you just select a location you want (a new folder will be automatically created).

I've set the tabs I want opening, but what I'm finding is that when I fire up Safari (after a shutdown for example), the tabs that are opening are not only the ones that I wanted, but also any that were open when I closed everything down.

I see Apple are making a push for Chrome and Firefox users to switch to Safari in Yosemite, but it's little things like this that spoil the experience (I like it overall, having come from Chrome).

The other thing that irks me, is not being able to set a default zoom view (having to hit CMD + on any other tabs I open) and not being able to alter the text size on the Bookmarks Bar.

Ok, maybe I'm just used to Chrome.

So are you saying that I have to close Safari with only my 5 homepage tabs open, to ensure that only those 5 open when I next launch Safari?

That seems to almost defeat the object of setting 5 specific tabs in the first place...

That quitting and reopening all tabs is actually normal behaviour.

It is a normal feature, but it can be easily disabled, mine starts a fresh session each time I close and reopen Safari.

Open terminal and enter the following.

defaults write com.apple.Safari NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

There is a setting you can change in the Safari preferences to stop last sessions tabs re-opening.
I know I changed it but I am not currently booted in Yosemite - maybe someone else can help if you don't stumble upon it yourself.

This is correct but I don't know where that setting is hiding.

I just tried that, but it didn't work for me.

I opened a couple of extra tabs as a test, closed Safari and reopened it and the extra tabs that were open opened again.

There is another global setting, but its wording has changed in Yosemite,

try System Preferences > General > Close Windows when quitting an App.

No. Quitting directly via Command and Q or pressing quit safari in the menu bar will leave your tabs intact, but if you don't want those tabs to relaunch, just hit the red cross.
