Is there any way to stop the Music app in Monterey from automatically adding every audio file I open to the library?

Or IE, I want to be the one choosing what music is actually in the library, not macOS.

select an audio file (are these mp3s? wav files? aiff?); if they're not all one type, do this with each one:

click the file once, hit command-I, and in the information window, select 'open with' (and, for example, choose quicktime). then click "change all". now, everytime you double click a similar file (ie an mp3), it will open in quicktime, but not be saved to the music app.

if you want to save it, or open it with a different app, just right-click on the file and choose "open with"... this will work one time, and not change your 'global' settings.
