Has anyone used an app like ZumoCast or ooTunes? I am interested in an app like this where I can access my entire movie and music collection at anytime. I would also like to have some kind of online backup in case something happens to my computer. Let me know what your thoughts are on these apps or similar ones.

Zumocast and AirVideo work fine for me. I have no experience with ooTunes.
In regard to online backup, I suggest you do a search and find out what is available, cost etc. When you find something that fits your budget/needs post back and ask about that product.

My issue with Zumocast is my computer has to be left running. At least that is the way I understand it. That is where I prefer a more web based program where I can access music from any computer; whenever I want.
No my back up does not need to be online but I do see some advantages. I am also not as familiar with he inner workings of hard drives for back ups. If I could fined a wireless hard drive that backs up everything automatically (effortlessly), I would be interested in that for all of my files. For music I would still prefer something that is web based.

That's exactly why I bought a Pogoplug. It's cheap, has an iphone app and I don't have to leave my Mac Pro running when I'm out of town.
I've found that it's the best option for streaming from home.

Carbonite meets and exceeds everything you are asking for!!!
Carbonite is an online computer backup system for both PC's and Macs. The program automatically backs up all Documents, Pictures, Files and Music. It will also back up videos but you have to select the videos you want to back up. The service is $55 per year to protect ALL of your files that backup in real time. You change a file, it backs up immediately.
The second part of this is that there is an App from Carbonite that installs on your iPhone and you can access every single file that is backed up from your computer over any connection source...although WiFi is recommended for large files. The result is that as long as the files are in a format that is recognized by an Apple device, then it will use the player to play them. If you need a document, then once it is opened, you can email it to yourself.

To understand what you are looking for I would like to ask a couple of questions.
You don't want to leave your computer on, rather you are looking for a solution that would allow you to use some kind of back up unit. With that backup unit you want to be able to access it from the web?
If that is the case, maybe Tversity can do this? I know it the ability to use a web browser to access content, but I have not tried it.
I would be interested in something like this as I do not want all these little server applets running in the background.

Hmmm...seems like a good possibility. Do you have carbonite and do you use it in this fashion? The reviews of the app seem mixed but are more positive than negative.
Yes.
Tversity is interesting but lacks an app that would/should make media easier to access. I also like the security features that Carbonite offers. I would say Carbonite is the way I am leaning right now.
Yes I do, I have used Carbonite on my lap top for two years now and it saved me from a crash. I have had the app for about 9 months and have used it when needed to grab a document or other item from my backup when I was not home. My lap top is shut off when ever I am away from it.
I will have it for the rest of my life as pictures and documents can never be recreated or repurchased. Fires and floods and criminals can destroy external drives. Storing off site is IMO the best way and having access to it anywhere in the world is worth the 56 bucks a year.
