iPhone music disappeared and wont sync?

HI,

strangely, I noticed that a lot of my music has since disappeared from my phone...the data looks there (eg track information) but it's greyed out and wont play

I've unchecked music from itunes, deleted from phone and tried to resync, but it starts the first track and then says 'cancelling sync' and stops

any ideas?

an update....

curiously, it will only sync songs that I have 'attempted' to play

I have about 6000 tracks....it looks like only about 1900 have sync'd. They show on my phone, but wont play.

if I pick one that is 'greyed out', and then hit sync on itunes, that one song will sync...

and so on...
