I was sent (by the artist) an advance copy of a forthcoming album. I successfully downloaded it into iTunes, but am unable to sync it with my iPhone. The Cloud icon displays that the music can't be sent to the Cloud. Any suggestions as to how to solve this?

Have you tried to transfer it by cable? Also note that iCloud music library (The feature you try to use) requires an active Apple Music subscription.

From the apple support page (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205919):
If you don't subscribe to Apple Music
  • You can redownload your past purchases from the iTunes Store on your iOS device or computer. Even if you bought an item on your iPhone, you can redownload it on your Mac.
  • You can manually sync the music on your iOS device with iTunes on your computer using a USB cable or over Wi-Fi. When you sync manually, your content copies from one device to another. For example, syncing your iPhone with your computer copies any selected music from iTunes on your computer to your device (if it's not already there). Your music collection stores locally on all of your devices and you can listen to it without being connected to Wi-Fi or the Internet.

Thanks. But, yes, I do have active Apple Music subscription, but not the right cable to go from my MBP to my iPhone 8. I did move the songs to Dropbox, so I can listen to them there, as well as on my laptop via iTunes. But that's about it.

A couple of things going on, I believe.

Why it did not load up to iCloud, the tracks might be in an unsupported format. Might try converting the tracks into AAC and then click the "upload" menu option.

Otherwise, would need to disable Apple Music on the phone to be able to sync music from iTunes to iPhone. And then can do that via wifi sync.
