is this the end for dedicated clan servers?

No MW2 Dedicated Servers!!! Some people are calling this the "Black Saturday", or "Day of Infamy", and it's not hard to see why.

Yesterday an interview was held between Jock Yitch (Bashandslash) and the community manager Rob Bowling (fourzerotwo) of MW2. For the raw version of the interview click http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2369799 (the crap starts at 1h40m) - and for the cut version of the interview click http://bashandslash.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=746&Itemid=69.

The following is a summary from the BASHandSLASH website news page:http://bashandslash.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=745&Itemid=111

•We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.
•There is no delay for the PC version of MW2
•There's prestige mode
•Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.
•You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.
•You have private matches where you can customize the game
•You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server.
•This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.
•Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match
•You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match.
•Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS
General

•IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.
•GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.
•No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.
•Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.
•DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.
•Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.
Clans

•No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.
•Listen servers will connect to each other.
•IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin
Competitive Gaming

•Competitive gaming has changed forever.
•It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.
Modding

•Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.
•Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.

This is truly a dark day for online gaming on PC's/Macs - grrr

I read about this earlier today... I don't get it. What's the problem? I'm not being sarcastic. I really don't understand the issue. Then again I don't play in clans or anything.

This was one feature I was hoping IW to adopt to consoles, but NO. Killzone 2 was great because you were able to select server and I hate matchmaking in CoD4. Hope they'll make it better at least...

I agree. Does this affect me on the 360?

It shouldn't. X360 and PS3 will still have the annoying "Find Game" button.

This decision by IW won't affect console gamers, only those who play on PC, and especially those who are in clans, or who seek servers with custom maps, mods, or server rules that attempt to control bad behavior.

Almost 100,000 signatures on the petition, just in the last 36 hours. Quite an angry response from PC gamers. Almost 1500 pre-order cancellations at Amazon alone.

The problem with no dedicated servers is that how you play and with whom will be determined by IWNet. That means no clans, no specific server rules, no admins to police servers for 12-year-olds with potty mouths.

It's a problem for those who have been playing PC games. It alienates an entire community of online gamers...slap in the face to an entire gaming culture that has been a significant component of online gaming since the first days on online Quake.

I dont find it "annoying" in the least. Games are found fast, and I can still have a clan in my party. Sure, sometimes its not the map you want, but you can just back out.

I guess since im not a PC gamer I dont see the outrage.

As long as the PC gamer petition does not hinder my ability to get the game on the 10th for the 360, more power to you guys.

No, it won't affect anything about how any of the gaming consoles work. What it does is make PC gaming for MW2 the same as consoles. About 10% of COD4 gamers play online using the PC version, and it is a HUGE change in the way the online experience works. I'm pretty confident that most will find it unacceptable and it appear that a significant majority of PC gamers will be skipping Modern Warfare 2.

What it does is completely kill the PC online gaming community all because a company wants to make an extra buck on downloadable maps that are now for sale, rather than being made by the PC modders. Sad thing is even with all of the cancelled PC copies, IW will make that lost money back quite quickly due to the money they will make from mappacks and what not. GG, I will not buy a game from a company that treats its community like that.

-the PC community depends on these 64 man servers so they can group up with their clans and play competitively, customize their own servers, and so on.

^^ Indeed !

We (the clan I play for) are looking at our options for alternative games. Perhaps the community will continue to update and mod the cod4/WAW games much like Half-life has been treated to (AHL etc).

Sad day indeed as this is the deathblow for the COD franchise on the PC :(

Given that no one has yet seen IW.net in action I think it's a bit childish to pass judgement.

Perhaps these private games will function very well?

well they have stated that 4v4 will be the maximum game size and also the ability to choose server/combatants will be restricted - sounds like its not clan friendly at all.

Very consoley (if thats a word).

If the bash and slash interview is the sole source of this information that is not the case at all. I can't quote exactly but I recall Robert Bowling saying "larger scale matches would be no problem" and "private matches will have complete control as to perks, who can join, who is kicked, etc"

http://bashandslash.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=746&Itemid=69

Yes, start listening about 20 min in and you will hear what I mentioned.

Maybe. Maybe not. Based on the rest of what Bobby has said about IWNet, I canceled my MW2 preorder. Maybe I'll buy it later if others can convince me that its playbility will meet my expectations, but this game will have to be really hot stuff for me accept that level of interference with my online gaming experience.

If I wanted to play online games on a console, I'd buy a console. I resent IW forcing the console experience on me, and will vote with my wallet by not buying the game.

yes but the main issue is

1. you get placed on a server with people around the same rank.
2. private servers CANT BE MODDED, only things that can be changed are like round time, no helicopter attacks etc etc...NO MODS, no fun game types, nothing but the stock maps.
3. They will now charge you if you want to play new maps they release. Economy is in a rough patch i dont want to be spending upwards 100 dollars for a game I could have just played for 50 dollars.

1. Speculation.

Nah, check out the press release on the IW page regarding IWnet for PC players, it is all there.

1. You won't be playing lvl 40's, you should in theory be playing people with your skill level. Because they can track every stat, every kill, every headshot they can provide excellent matchmaking, beyond what they're capable of on the consoles.

2. No mods is true, I didn't correctly read your original statement and thought you were saying things couldn't be customized within stock parameters,

3. When I see it, I'll believe it. Do you think Infinity Ward is going to charge PC players for the maps? Honestly believe that is going to happen? No, it won't. Especially after the temper-tantrum reaction PC gamers have given them to a system they have not yet seen they are going to tread lightly.

Honestly, though it wouldn't be fun for me, I would like to see Activision pull the plug on the PC version, eat the loss on development and manufacturing, and give PC users what they're asking for; no game.

I will reserve judgement for IW.net until I see it. The sense of entitlement of PC gamers is sickening.

I'd kinda like them to publish a PC version. This is one of those things that about 2 weeks after it comes out, nobody is going to care about.

InfinityWard just needs to demonstrate IW.net working well. I have confidence in this developer and think that yes, this will blow over and probably help the game overall.

Its hard to reserve my judgement but its a big shocker to me and on top of that IW raised the price for the game to $60!

Dont you think with that strategy ppl are gonna find alternative games to buy like left 4 dead 2?
